Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema officially inaugurated a 100 MW emergency solar project in Kabwe, developed by POWERCHINA. The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Minister of Energy Peter Makozo Chikote, Wang Li, Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Zambia, and other senior government officials and representatives.

President Hichilema highlighted the significance of the project’s connection to the national grid, describing it as a major milestone in Zambia’s journey toward achieving its target of 1,000 MW of solar power capacity. He commended the collaboration between POWERCHINA, ZESCO, and other stakeholders, stating that the initiative reflects the strong, mutually beneficial cooperation between Zambia and China.

The solar plant is expected to stimulate local economic growth, improve social welfare, and contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions. It marks a critical step in Zambia’s broader efforts to diversify its energy mix, tackle climate change, and enhance energy security.

Counselor Wang Li underscored the project as a symbol of the enduring friendship and strong bilateral relations between China and Zambia. She reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s renewable energy ambitions and expressed hope for continued progress in their partnership.
