onsemi to build $20m semiconductor R&D centre in New York

onsemi, the largest US-based manufacturer of silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors, has unveiled plans to build a $20m semiconductor research and development facility at Stony Brook University, New York.

The centre will support the study of crystal growth, processing, and metrology, which will help to grow bigger, higher-quality silicon carbide crystals.

Silicon carbide is a key component of next-generation semiconductors and is vital to building more powerful, efficient, and cleaner electric vehicles and energy infrastructure.

The facility will also support new discoveries for New York’s semiconductor industry.
