NorthWestern Energy Commits To Power Quantica Infrastructure’s Future Data Center Project In Montana Through Signed Letter Of Intent

NorthWestern Energy Group, Inc., operating as NorthWestern Energy, has signed a letter of intent to provide energy services for a new data center project proposed by Quantica Infrastructure in Montana. The agreement outlines plans to potentially deliver energy through NorthWestern Energy’s regulated business, pending further review and regulatory approvals. This method of service delivery may help improve cost efficiency by allowing fixed infrastructure costs in Montana to be shared across a wider base of customers.

The proposed data center project will be developed in phases, with an initial energy load of 500 megawatts and potential expansion to 1 gigawatt. Electric service could begin as early as 2026, with the full Phase 1 buildout expected by 2030, depending on progress in permitting, infrastructure development, and related planning efforts.

Brian Bird, President and CEO of NorthWestern Energy, stated, “We’re actively working with Quantica to optimize the transmission infrastructure and generation resources needed to support this project. Montana’s clean energy portfolio, reliable grid, and competitive rates make it an attractive location for new industries. This collaboration reflects our commitment to innovation, economic development, and delivering high-quality energy services.”

John Chesser, CEO of Quantica Infrastructure, mentioned, “We are excited to collaborate with NorthWestern to bring a shovel-ready, network-ready site for hyperscalers and AI that utilizes resilient power backed by dedicated renewable energy. A project of this scale will create meaningful employment opportunities along with improvements in telecommunications and power infrastructure for Montanans.”

Bleau LaFave, Vice President of Asset Management and Business Development at NorthWestern Energy, remarked, “The scale of Quantica’s projected energy demand presents an opportunity to improve overall system efficiency. By delivering more kilowatt-hours across our system, we can better utilize our infrastructure and potentially reduce per-unit costs.”

To prepare for this, NorthWestern Energy is currently carrying out a transmission study to determine the best way to supply energy to the facility. Quantica is also advancing several generation projects of its own. The overall energy solution is expected to include a mix of new resources — both renewable and dispatchable — and supporting infrastructure that connects to the existing electric grid. This combination is intended to ensure reliable power for the data center while maintaining grid stability and managing costs for all of NorthWestern Energy’s customers.

The collaboration between NorthWestern Energy and Quantica represents a significant development for Montana’s economy and technology sector, highlighting the importance of dependable energy infrastructure in attracting new investments to the region.
