Australian technology company Carbon280 has unveiled a new plant capable of separating hydrogen from helium before storing the hydrogen ready for transport.

The 100 kW TRL 6 prototype facility, based in Kwinana near Perth, uses the company’s Hydrilyte technology to separate natural hydrogen and helium – gases that are difficult to separate due to their similar molecular size.

By enabling hydrogen to be stored safely at ambient temperature and pressure, Carbon280 says the solution addresses a “major bottle neck” in the hydrogen supply chain and makes transport safer, more efficient, and more economically viable.

“Rather than transporting a highly flammable gas you are storing and transporting a safe, low-cost liquid that stores hydrogen under ambient conditions,” said Mark Rheinlander, Founder & CEO of Carbon280. “Low-cost and ease of handling will simplify and speed the implementation of hydrogen projects globally.”
