Vedanta Sesa Goa’s River Fleet Shipping (RFS) Division has taken a major step toward sustainable marine logistics through the integration of solar power under its Project ‘Uday’. The division has successfully commissioned a solar-powered energy system for auxiliary load management on its barge MV ‘Mogri’, marking the beginning of a larger adoption plan across the fleet. The system is powered by high-efficiency 550 Wp Mono PERC (PE-550HM) solar panels and is designed to support essential onboard energy needs such as accommodation and navigation lighting, along with other auxiliary loads.

The newly installed setup is expected to deliver significant energy efficiency improvements and environmental benefits. On a single barge, the system will help reduce approximately 6.53 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually, which corresponds to the environmental impact of planting around 300 trees. When deployed across the entire fleet, the initiative is projected to achieve an annual reduction of 149.85 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions. This effort contributes directly to Vedanta’s Scope 1 emissions reduction targets, aligning with the company’s broader commitment to sustainability.

Mr. Nitesh Samant, CEO – River Fleet Shipping, stated, “Project ‘Uday’ is an important milestone in our vision to create a sustainable logistics ecosystem. The successful deployment of the solar powered module on MV ‘Mogri’ testifies to our commitment to constantly evolve & develop scalable, high-impact energy solutions. We are committed to expanding this model progressively across the entire fleet.”

Project ‘Uday’ is structured to align with international and national frameworks for decarbonization and energy conservation. These include the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Decarbonization Strategy, India’s Energy Conservation Act, 2001, and MARPOL Annex VI emission standards.

By integrating renewable energy into its core marine operations, the River Fleet Shipping Division is not only advancing Vedanta’s sustainability goals but also reflecting the broader industry shift toward cleaner and more efficient maritime practices. Through this initiative, Vedanta Sesa Goa underscores its commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship while contributing to India’s energy transition and global climate goals.
