EMSTEEL Delivers First Hydrogen-Based Rebar For Construction Of Abu Dhabi’s First Net-Zero Mosque By Aldar

EMSTEEL, one of the region’s largest publicly traded steel and building materials manufacturers, has achieved a significant milestone by supplying hydrogen-based rebar for the construction of Abu Dhabi’s first net-zero carbon mosque. Located in Sustainable City on Yas Island, the mosque is being developed by Aldar and is set to become the first project in the MENA region to use low-emission hydrogen-based steel in construction.

The rebar was produced using hydrogen from EMSTEEL’s green hydrogen pilot project, launched last year in collaboration with Masdar. By incorporating this innovative material, the mosque will be able to meet the requirements for LEED Zero Carbon certification, making it a landmark achievement in sustainable architecture for Abu Dhabi.

Engineer Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Group Chief Executive Officer, EMSTEEL, said: “This landmark delivery reinforces EMSTEEL’s commitment to driving industrial sustainability and accelerating the UAE’s transition to a low-carbon economy. In collaboration with Aldar, EMSTEEL is setting a powerful precedent for the adoption of green steel across future residential, commercial, and public infrastructure projects. The partnership signals a bold shift in the construction industry, emphasising the role of innovative, locally manufactured materials in achieving national climate goals and redefining the future of urban development.”

This delivery marks the first time hydrogen-based steel has been deployed for construction in the region, reflecting growing momentum in the use of clean technologies to decarbonize the building materials sector. It also highlights how partnerships between heavy industry players and clean energy leaders can accelerate the adoption of low-carbon solutions at scale.

For Aldar, the use of EMSTEEL’s hydrogen-based rebar underscores its commitment to sustainable development and positions the project as a model for future construction initiatives across the Middle East. For EMSTEEL, the milestone demonstrates how its early investment in hydrogen innovation is beginning to transform the steel industry and contribute directly to the UAE’s climate and energy transition goals.
