The latest 1895 podcast hears from Buddy Damm, Senior Scientist of Metallurgy at Swagelok, who outlines the importance of material science in hydrogen production, focusing on fluid control components and their role in processes like steam methane reforming and electrolysis.

Alongside sharing his insights on material selection, he reflects on the challenges of hydrogen embrittlement, and significance of high-quality alloys in ensuring safety and efficiency in hydrogen systems, and highlights the versatility of Swagelok’s 316 stainless steel, used for 3/16-inch tubing.

“I like to think of material science as a mix up of chemical engineering, solid state physics and mechanics: how products respond to stresses is really a blend of disciplines,” he says.

Fluid control components are elements such as valves, regulators and fittings which are connected to the main production processes.
