B2U Storage Solutions has announced the start of commercial operations at its Bexar Martinez battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Texas. The facility will provide 28 MWh of grid services to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).
Located near San Antonio and within the CPS Energy service territory, the project uses exclusively repurposed electric vehicle (EV) batteries, demonstrating the deployment of second-life battery technology at utility scale.
B2U’s Texas Portfolio Exceeds 50 MWh
Bexar Martinez is the second BESS project in Texas developed and equipped by B2U using its patented battery storage cabinets containing repurposed EV batteries.
The company said its approach extends the useful life of EV batteries beyond their initial automotive applications, while reducing battery waste and lowering the cost of grid-scale energy storage.
With the Bexar Martinez project now operational, B2U’s total portfolio providing grid services to ERCOT has surpassed 50 MWh.
Across Texas and California, the company is managing more than 5,000 repurposed EV batteries and operates approximately 100 MWh of energy storage capacity across solar-paired and standalone configurations.
Freeman Hall, CEO of B2U Storage Solutions, said the Bexar Martinez project demonstrates the ability of second-life batteries to provide grid services at scale while extending the useful life of battery resources.
Additional ERCOT Capacity Planned
The project is located in one of the fastest-growing regions of the ERCOT market and is intended to support grid reliability amid rising electricity demand.
B2U expects to deploy an additional 50+ MWh of energy storage capacity in ERCOT over the next six months.
The company said its second-life battery projects can provide a lower-cost storage option while contributing to grid reliability.
Project Receives Financing and ITC Benefits
B2U said the Bexar Martinez project and its other operating sites qualify for the domestic content bonus under the Investment Tax Credit (ITC).
The projects have also received third-party financing and have been acquired by B2U Infrastructure Partners, supporting the commercial and financial viability of the second-life battery storage model.
The commercial operation of Bexar Martinez marks another deployment of repurposed EV batteries for grid-scale energy storage as the U.S. energy storage market expands to address increasing electricity demand and grid flexibility requirements.
