European ethanol plants captured 1.5m tonnes of CO2 in 2024

European renewable ethanol producers are now a major source of captured carbon dioxide, with more than half of the sector’s installed capacity fitted with CO2 capture systems. In 2024, European ethanol plants captured 1.5m tonnes of CO2, according to the latest figures from the European Renewable Ethanol Association (also known as ePURE).

In the same year, production of 5.41 million tonnes of ethanol was accompanied by 6.9 million tonnes of food and feed co-products, including high-protein animal feed.

More than half of Europe’s renewable ethanol production capacity is now equipped with CO2 capture systems, making the sector one of the continent’s most established providers of concentrated carbon streams.
