Poland has opened its first industrial scale biomethane plant, marking a milestone in its energy development.
Gas distribution system operator Polska Spolka Gazownictwa connected the 45MW Sudzucker plant to its network.
The plant, believed to be the largest sugar refiner in Europe, will produce biomethane from sugar beet residue for the needs of its factory in Strzelin in the Lower Silesia province, and inject the surplus into the grid via a 9km pipeline, which was completed last year along with new boilers.
David Hurren, CEO of DAH Renewable Consulting, said, “Momentum is building – this is more than a plant, it’s Poland’s biomethane breakthrough.”
