Norway-based Normod Carbon (Normod) has secured exclusivity and customer commitments with the Port of Grenaa in Denmark to develop a €250m carbon dioxide hub that will handle up to 10 million tonnes of CO2 a year.
The facility, due to begin operations in 2029, will act as an intermediate storage site to consolidate captured CO2 before shipping it to permanent offshore or onshore storage, reducing transport and storage costs and, it is hoped, accelerating the rollout of carbon capture projects across Northern Europe.
The project is part of the company’s ambition to develop the region’s largest network of CO2 hubs that can bring together over 20 million tonnes per year for storing or using CO2.
