GE Vernova and KAPES Selected for Major 500 kV HVDC Power Grid Project to Strengthen South Korea’s Energy Infrastructure

GE Vernova Inc.has announced that its joint venture, KAPES, has been selected by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) to deliver its advanced High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) system for the 500 kV Donghaean #2 to Dong-Seoul HVDC converter station project (EP2). This initiative, part of a larger 4 GW HVDC transmission link, is set to connect South Korea’s power generation complex on the east coast to the Seoul metropolitan area, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s energy infrastructure.

Key Project Details

The EP2 project, together with the EP1 project, is designed to provide a stable and reliable power supply to the Seoul metropolitan area, which accounts for nearly 40% of South Korea’s energy demand. Both projects will leverage GE Vernova’s cutting-edge HVDC technology, improving power transmission efficiency and grid resilience to meet growing energy needs.

GE Vernova’s responsibilities in the EP2 project include the engineering and delivery of HVDC Valves and Control Systems based on Line Commutated Converter (LCC) technology. This advanced technology will ensure the efficient and stable transmission of large-scale power.

The EP2 project is a key element in KEPCO’s vision for a sustainable energy future, emphasizing the role of HVDC technology in the country’s energy transition. This project will enable more efficient power transmission to key industrial regions and strengthen South Korea’s national energy network.

This collaboration with KEPCO through KAPES aligns with South Korea’s energy vision.”

KAPES, the joint venture between KEPCO and GE Vernova established in 2012, has delivered several critical projects, including the Buk-Dangjin-Godeok HVDC Connection and the Shin-Bupyeong HVDC Link. These initiatives have been pivotal in addressing South Korea’s unique energy needs, enhancing grid stability, and advancing the nation’s energy infrastructure.

High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology is crucial for sustainable energy systems, providing efficient power transmission over long distances with minimal energy loss. The LCC-based HVDC systems, such as the one being implemented in the EP2 project, are designed to transmit bulk power up to 8 GW while ensuring stability and protection against faults. This technology is essential for integrating renewable energy and supporting bi-directional energy flow within South Korea’s grid.

The EP2 project will link the east coast’s power generation facilities with the high-demand Seoul area, including semiconductor manufacturing hubs in Yongin, Incheon, and Pyeongtaek, playing a significant role in the country’s energy transition.
