Solarcentury Africa has started full commercial operations at the second phase of its Mailo solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Zambia, adding 34.5 MWp of solar generation capacity to the country’s electricity sector. The development marks another milestone in the phased expansion of the Mailo solar project, which is planned to reach a total capacity of 118 MWp.
The start of commercial operations follows the successful completion of construction activities and grid compliance testing. With the commissioning of Mailo 2, the total operational capacity of the Mailo solar PV plant has increased to 59.5 MWp, strengthening its contribution to Zambia’s renewable energy generation.
The second phase received equity investment from Solarcentury Africa’s parent company, BB Energy, while Standard Bank South Africa provided debt financing for the project. Alensy Energy Solutions was appointed as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor responsible for delivering the plant. Construction was completed in less than 12 months, highlighting the project’s progress within its planned development timeline.
Mailo 2 builds on the performance of the first phase of the Mailo solar PV plant, which began operating in July 2025. The first phase operates on a fully merchant basis, selling electricity through the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). This arrangement demonstrates the commercial potential of merchant-based solar generation in Zambia, where electricity can be traded through regional power markets.
The additional capacity is expected to support Zambia’s growing electricity demand by increasing renewable power generation and contributing to energy security. The project also aligns with the country’s broader efforts to diversify its energy sources and advance its energy transition.
Solarcentury Africa currently has a portfolio of 350 MW of solar projects in Zambia across operational, construction and development stages. The Mailo project represents an important part of the company’s activities in the country as it continues to expand its renewable energy presence.
Jason de Carteret, Chief Executive Officer of Solarcentury Africa, said the start of commercial operations at Mailo 2 was a significant milestone for the project. He also acknowledged the efforts and collaboration of the teams involved in delivering the second phase and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s increasing demand for reliable and sustainable electricity.
