A UK government-commissioned review has called for a coordinated national strategy to scale up greenhouse gas removals (GGRs), with the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) hailing it as a “big step forward” for recognising the role of green gas in tackling climate change.
The independent review on GGRs, led by Dr Alan Whitehead,, concluded that carbon removal technologies will be essential to balance the UK’s residual emissions by 2050.
It recommends the creation of an Office for Greenhouse Gas Removals, the development of a national GGR strategy, and greater support for distributed and non-pipeline transport of captured carbon dioxide.
The review warns that the UK’s current approach focuses too heavily on large cluster-based carbon capture and storage projects while neglecting smaller, dispersed options such as anaerobic digestion (AD), biochar and enhanced weathering.
