Vietnam has officially launched its first National Green Hydrogen Hub at the Vietnamese-German University (VGU), marking a major milestone in the country’s clean energy transition and positioning it as an emerging leader in the global hydrogen economy. The hub has been established under the German-supported H2Uppp programme, implemented by GIZ, to foster innovation, technology transfer, and international collaboration in green hydrogen production and applications.

The new Green Hydrogen Hub will serve as a strategic platform to develop renewable hydrogen technologies, build local expertise, and support large-scale deployment across key industries such as power generation, transportation, fertiliser, steel, and chemicals. It will play a central role in realising Vietnam’s national target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and meeting its commitment to scaling up renewable energy capacity.

  • Develop hydrogen production powered by renewable energy sources such as solar and wind
  • Facilitate international partnerships for technology development and financing
  • Support the creation of a domestic green hydrogen supply chain
  • Encourage investment in hydrogen infrastructure to enable export opportunities
  • Provide training and R&D capabilities to build a skilled workforce

The launch signals Vietnam’s transition from policy planning to practical implementation of hydrogen technologies. With strong support from Germany and participation of global clean energy companies, the hub is expected to drive commercial-scale hydrogen projects and attract foreign investment.

Industry experts note that Vietnam’s abundant renewable energy potential provides a competitive advantage for low-cost green hydrogen production, positioning the country to become a regional hub for clean fuel exports in the future.

By establishing the National Green Hydrogen Hub, Vietnam is laying the groundwork for a future green hydrogen economy that will support domestic decarbonisation goals while creating new opportunities in global energy markets. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to energy innovation, sustainable growth and climate leadership in Southeast Asia.
