OMV and Masdar Form Joint Venture to Develop One of Europe’s Largest 140 MW Green Hydrogen Plants in Austria

OMV, Austria’s integrated energy, fuels, and chemicals company, and Masdar, a global clean energy leader, have signed a binding agreement to form a joint venture for the financing, construction, and operation of a 140 MW green hydrogen electrolyzer plant in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria. Set to become one of Europe’s largest green hydrogen production facilities, the project represents a major step in OMV’s strategy to decarbonize its Schwechat refinery and accelerate the energy transition. Construction began in September 2025, with operations expected to commence in 2027.

Under the agreement, OMV will hold a majority stake in the joint venture, while Masdar will own 49 percent. The partnership brings together OMV’s expertise in integrated fuels and chemicals with Masdar’s global experience in clean energy development and financing. OMV, which already operates a 10 MW green hydrogen electrolyzer in Schwechat, will supply renewable electricity for production and retain ownership of the hydrogen output.

The collaboration also paves the way for future strategic projects between OMV and Masdar focused on green hydrogen, synthetic sustainable aviation fuels (e-SAF), and synthetic chemicals in both the UAE and Europe. The joint venture is expected to close in early 2026, pending final documentation and regulatory approvals. The agreement was signed at ADIPEC in the presence of UAE and Austrian government officials, as well as senior executives from OMV and Masdar.

”The UAE has a longstanding commitment to working with our partners to accelerate the global energy systems transformation. This joint venture unites Masdar’s two decades of renewable energy leadership with OMV’s industrial capability, paving the way for future commercial opportunities across Europe. Today’s agreement also underscores the deep and growing collaboration between the UAE and Austria in powering growth for the Information Age,” said H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar:
