Enel North America Completes 911 MW GulfStar Solar and Storage Project, Its Largest U.S. Power Plant

Enel North America has completed its largest U.S. power plant with the start of operations at the 556 MWdc GulfStar solar facility in Wharton County, Texas. The solar plant is co-located with an operational 355 MWdc battery energy storage system (BESS), bringing the site’s total capacity to 911MWdc. This milestone reinforces Enel’s leadership in large-scale renewable energy and energy storage development across North America.

The GulfStar BESS reached initial commercial operation in late 2024, marking a key expansion of Enel’s growing battery portfolio. According to S&P Global Commodity Insights, Enel is now the third-largest battery storage operator in the United States. With 14 battery systems in operation, Enel’s storage assets enhance grid reliability by storing and dispatching clean energy in real time, supporting growing power demand and helping stabilize the grid during extreme weather events.

Over its lifetime, the GulfStar solar and storage complex is expected to generate more than $200 million in local tax revenues and landowner income, creating long-term economic value for the region. The project also provided jobs for over 1,200 workers during construction, underscoring Enel’s continued commitment to delivering clean energy and community benefits through large-scale renewable infrastructure.
