Powertrust, a leading energy procurement platform focused on high-impact renewable projects in emerging markets, has announced a major collaboration with Microsoft to deploy 270 megawatts (MW) of distributed solar energy across Mexico and Brazil over the next four years. This initiative aims to accelerate the clean energy transition in Latin America while providing significant benefits to underserved communities.

Under the agreement, Microsoft will purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) generated by Powertrust’s solar projects. This supports Microsoft’s goal to become carbon negative by 2030 and contributes to its broader strategy of reducing Scope 3 emissions through investments in sustainable and impactful energy solutions.

Beyond environmental benefits, the partnership is designed to empower local communities. The solar projects will bring energy savings to low-income households and community organizations, creating opportunities for reduced energy costs. The initiative will also generate local employment and support workforce development through training programs in solar installation and maintenance. Powertrust plans to work closely with local NGOs and community leaders to ensure projects are inclusively developed and maintain long-term engagement with the communities they serve. Additionally, the projects will support education, healthcare, and infrastructure initiatives, amplifying the social impact of clean energy investments.

Nick Fedorkiw, CEO of Powertrust, said the collaboration demonstrates how corporate climate leadership can align with community empowerment. He highlighted that investing in distributed solar in Mexico and Brazil not only accelerates the clean energy transition but also delivers tangible benefits to local populations. Danielle Decatur, Director of Microsoft’s Energy Team, emphasized Microsoft’s commitment to sustainable development and creating infrastructure that enhances health, safety, and well-being in communities.

This collaboration between Powertrust and Microsoft exemplifies a model of climate-aligned corporate procurement, where clean energy deployment goes hand-in-hand with social and economic benefits. By targeting areas with limited access to reliable energy, the partnership seeks to create a lasting impact, combining environmental responsibility with community development in Latin America.
