Major regional and international initiatives are gaining momentum across the Middle East and Europe to expand renewable energy, enhance water security, and advance green hydrogen production. Several landmark projects have recently reached key milestones, reflecting the growing commitment to sustainable development and decarbonization.

Oman Nama Power and Water Procurement Company has signed an agreement with a consortium led by Sembcorp Utilities and OQ Alternative Energy to develop the 125-megawatt Dhofar II Wind Power Project. The contract is based on a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement, and operations are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2027. The wind farm will span approximately 12 million square meters and is projected to supply clean electricity to more than 18,000 homes. The project is also expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by roughly 158,000 tonnes each year and save 76 million cubic meters of natural gas annually. Dhofar II supports Oman’s Vision 2040 strategy and its national goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Nama PWP is aiming to attract around $5 billion in renewable energy and energy storage investments within the next five years as part of its broader transition strategy.

Meanwhile, in Europe, Masdar and OMV have signed a binding agreement to establish a joint venture for a major green hydrogen initiative. The partners will develop and operate a 140-megawatt electrolyser facility in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria. Scheduled to open in 2027, it is set to become one of the largest green hydrogen production plants in Europe. Under the agreement, OMV will maintain a majority ownership stake, while Masdar will hold 49 percent. The collaboration brings together OMV’s industrial expertise and Masdar’s leadership in renewable energy to support the decarbonization of OMV’s Schwechat refinery and expand green hydrogen usage across the region. The agreement also opens opportunities for cooperation in synthetic sustainable aviation fuels and green chemical production. The project aligns with the UAE’s ambitions in global clean energy leadership and strengthens Austria’s position as an emerging hub for hydrogen innovation.

These projects highlight how renewable power, desalination efficiency, and hydrogen production are becoming central pillars of sustainable growth strategies. Together, they demonstrate strong regional and international collaboration aimed at advancing energy security and reducing carbon emissions while enabling long-term economic development.
