Indian Railways has made significant strides in adopting solar energy across its extensive network, marking a strong push towards cleaner and more sustainable operations. As of November 2025, a total of 2,626 railway stations are now powered by solar energy. This expansion has helped reduce energy costs and is contributing to a steady shift towards environmentally friendly railway operations throughout the country. In the current financial year alone, 318 new stations have been added to the solar-powered network, reflecting the growing momentum in clean energy adoption.

A major milestone in this journey is the commissioning of 898 MW of solar power for Indian Railways’ operations. This is a remarkable increase compared to just 3.68 MW in 2014, representing nearly a 244-fold growth over the past decade. Out of this total capacity, 629 MW is dedicated to traction purposes, directly supporting electric train operations. The remaining 269 MW meets non-traction needs, including station lighting, workshops, service buildings, and railway quarters. The balanced use of solar energy across both traction and non-traction requirements reduces dependence on conventional energy sources while enhancing the efficiency of railway operations.

Solar installations are not limited to stations alone; they also extend to railway buildings and land, helping meet the growing energy demands of Indian Railways in a sustainable manner. These initiatives play an important role in improving energy security and supporting decarbonisation goals. By adopting solar energy on such a large scale, Indian Railways is taking concrete steps towards reducing its carbon footprint. The efforts underline the organisation’s commitment to achieving Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2030. With continued expansion and utilisation of renewable energy, Indian Railways is positioning itself as a leader in clean and sustainable transportation in the country.
