NTPC Ltd., through its research and development wing NETRA, is strengthening its presence in the green energy space by setting up a Plasma gasification–based Green Hydrogen Plant at its campus in Greater Noida. This new project reflects NTPC’s growing focus on sustainability, innovation, and cleaner energy solutions beyond conventional power generation.

The proposed plant will be designed to produce one tonne of green hydrogen per day. It will use advanced plasma gasification technology to convert waste into tar-free syngas. This syngas will then be processed further to produce hydrogen using PSA or membrane-based separation technology. The project will be implemented entirely at the NETRA campus and will use municipal solid waste-derived refuse-derived fuel (MSW-RDF) and agricultural waste as feedstock. By using waste materials, the plant will support both clean energy production and waste management goals.

The initiative highlights NTPC’s efforts to explore alternative and cleaner fuel pathways while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Plasma gasification is considered an advanced technology as it enables efficient conversion of waste into useful energy products with minimal environmental impact. Through this project, NTPC aims to demonstrate the commercial and environmental viability of producing green hydrogen from waste resources.

NTPC is currently India’s largest power producer and contributes nearly one-fourth of the country’s total electricity requirements. The company has an installed capacity of more than 85 GW and has an additional 30.90 GW under construction. This includes around 13.3 GW of renewable energy capacity. NTPC has set long-term targets to reach 149 GW by 2032, with 60 GW coming from renewable sources, and 244 GW by 2037.

With a diversified portfolio that includes thermal, hydro, gas, solar, and wind power plants, NTPC continues to focus on delivering reliable and affordable electricity while gradually increasing its clean energy share. In recent years, the company has expanded into new business areas such as e-mobility, battery energy storage, pumped hydro storage, waste-to-energy, nuclear power, and green hydrogen solutions.

The new green hydrogen project at NETRA underlines NTPC’s commitment to adopting advanced technologies, encouraging innovation, and supporting India’s transition towards a greener and more sustainable energy future.
