An authority in Abu Dhabi, UAE, has launched a new carbon capture policy designed to build a framework for regulation of carbon capture, utilisation, and storage activities across the emirate.
The Supreme Council for Financial and Economic Affairs has developed the policy around several pillars, including optimising the use of locally available resources for carbon dioxide storage.
While Abu Dhabi has previously signalled its intent to regulate CCUS, details have been scarce.
In other regions, CCUS policies typically focus on permitting, storage site safety, monitoring and long-term liability – ensuring that captured CO2 is handled securely and contributes to national emissions reduction targets.
