Concord Control Systems Limited announced an important achievement in India’s shift toward clean railway technology through its fully owned subsidiary, Advanced Rail Controls Private Limited. The company has received a major contract from NTPC Limited to develop a 3,100 HP green hydrogen hybrid locomotive propulsion system. The order is valued at ₹47 crore and is considered historic because it will convert a diesel locomotive into a high-horsepower hydrogen-powered engine. This is the highest such conversion attempted anywhere in the world. Until now, the global benchmark for hydrogen rail systems was around 1,600 HP, and this new project nearly doubles that capability.

The work will be carried out in partnership with Railway Engineering Works and strengthens India’s position as a global leader in green locomotive innovation. Unlike earlier hydrogen-based prototypes tested in some countries, this system is designed for commercial freight operations. It aims to show that hydrogen can be a practical and reliable fuel for heavy-duty transport.

Company leaders described the national value of this initiative. Gaurav Lath, Joint Managing Director, said the project supports the global move toward zero emissions by delivering future-ready railway technology. Nitin Jain, also Joint Managing Director, said the project highlights the strength of Indian engineering and the importance of cooperation between different technology sectors. NTPC representatives added that the contract is the result of long-term planning to bring hydrogen-powered trains from concept to reality. It also helps create demand for hydrogen in the market, where off-takers are still limited.

This project aligns with the vision of the Union Railway Minister and directly supports the target set by Indian Railways to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. It also strengthens the Make in India mission and opens possibilities for exporting Indian-built hydrogen locomotive systems to international markets. Concord, an RDSO-approved OEM, continues to use its research capabilities to meet global safety standards and contribute to the modernization and digital transformation of India’s railway network.
