EU countries have given their approval to ban Russian gas imports by late 2027, four years after the invasion of Ukraine.
Countries approved the law in Brussels although Slovakia and Hungary voted against and Bulgaria abstained.
Under the agreement, the EU will halt Russian and pipeline gas by 30 September 2027, although that deadline can shift to 1 November.
Last month, the five biggest EU importers spent $1.66bn on Russian energy, mostly on gas and LNG, according to the non-profit Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, although the bloc’s imports of Russian gas fell by 75% between 2021 and 2025.
