European biomethane developer and operator Cycle0 will later this year convert the Corte Pila plant in the Lombardy region of Italy to biomethane production.

The conversation means biomethane will be directly injected into a new gas grid injection point which is also being built, as part of an €100m investment, and CycleO is targeting average production of 44 GWh each year at the 14-year-old plant, which previously used agricultural feedstock to generate electricity.

The plant will be operated by Cycle0 with the continued involvement of previous owner Franco Angeli. The plant and the investment aids local economic development by generating renewable natural gas to support Italy’s renewable transition.

The new investment complements the plant currently under construction in Pontinia in the Lazio region, which is also due for completion mid-2026. Combined with Corte Pila, the two plants will produce up to a total of 90 GWh, or 8 million standard cubic metres of gas – enough to meet the average gas needs of around 6,000 Italian homes.
