Fort Wayne City Utilities has embraced energy innovation by launching its first integrated microgrid system. This milestone became a reality through a partnership with Solential Energy, a leader in energy solutions. Initially, the concept of an integrated microgrid wasn’t part of the plan, but Solential’s expertise helped bring this transformative idea to life.

Solential Energy excels at finding innovative energy solutions that customers might not have considered. For City Utilities, the primary goal was to boost energy resilience and sustainability. Using its proprietary Critical Load Evaluation and Assessment Report (CLEAR) process, Solential conducted an in-depth analysis of the utility’s energy usage and operational needs.

This analysis revealed the opportunity to create a microgrid system that links three separate facilities into a single, unified energy network. The solution incorporates City Utilities’ existing biogas plant with newly installed solar panels, battery storage, and advanced smart controls, all seamlessly integrated into the current infrastructure.

Matthew Wirtz, Deputy Director of City Utilities in Fort Wayne, Indiana, said “City Utilities wasn’t set on the concept of an integrated microgrid until it contracted with energy company Solential to help build the project.”

Jim Shaw, President of Solential Energy, stated, “City Utilities was initially exploring more traditional energy upgrades. When we evaluated their needs and showed them the scalability, cost savings, and resilience benefits of an integrated microgrid, it was a game-changer. Our mission is to think beyond the obvious and deliver solutions that exceed expectations.”

City Utilities has launched a new microgrid system aimed at delivering reliable and sustainable energy while helping to reduce carbon emissions. The system is designed to precisely manage energy demand, store surplus energy for peak periods, and ensure uninterrupted operations during power outages—offering benefits beyond a typical renewable energy setup.

Developed by Solential Energy, this project showcases the company’s ability to create customized energy solutions for municipalities, utilities, and businesses in the Midwest. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, industry expertise, and a collaborative approach, Solential empowers clients to achieve their energy goals efficiently and sustainably.
