Indian Stock Market Ends Mixed As Renewable Energy And Utility Stocks See Selective Buying (21 May 2026)

Professionals discuss rising renewable energy stocks in the Indian market.

Indian stock markets ended on a slightly negative note on May 21, 2026, as benchmark indices witnessed mild profit booking amid mixed investor sentiment. The S&P BSE Sensex closed at 75,183.36, down 0.18 percent, while the Nifty 50 settled 0.09 percent lower at 23,636.60. Despite the weak broader market trend, the green energy and mobility sectors displayed mixed performances with selective buying in renewable energy, utility, and battery-related stocks.

Among the top gainers in the renewable energy segment, Insolation Energy recorded a strong rise of more than 2.1 percent to close at Rs 138.20 on the BSE. EKI Energy Services emerged as another major gainer, surging nearly 5 percent during the trading session. Investors also showed buying interest in energy and utility-related companies.

JSW Energy gained 2.06 percent to settle at Rs 548.00, while Indian Energy Exchange advanced more than 1.3 percent to close at Rs 127.10. State-owned oil and gas companies also traded in positive territory. Indian Oil Corporation rose 1.52 percent to end at Rs 140.15, whereas GAIL posted a marginal gain of 0.19 percent to close at Rs 155.85.

Battery and power management companies witnessed stable buying momentum. Amara Raja Energy & Mobility climbed nearly 1 percent to Rs 819.95, while Exide Industries edged slightly higher by 0.27 percent to Rs 340.40. Engineering and infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro also ended the session in green, gaining 0.46 percent to close at Rs 3,930.00. Smaller renewable energy firms such as Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy and Websol Energy also recorded mild gains during the session.

On the other hand, several major clean energy and infrastructure stocks witnessed selling pressure. Reliance Industries was among the key laggards, falling nearly 1 percent to close at Rs 1,346.70. Electric vehicle company Olectra Greentech also declined around 1 percent to Rs 1,208.45.

Adani Green Energy slipped 0.62 percent to close at Rs 1,354.75, while Tata Power dropped 0.79 percent to settle at Rs 410.15. Newly listed clean energy company NTPC Green Energy Limited also witnessed mild profit booking and declined 0.57 percent to Rs 105.30. Borosil Renewables fell 0.61 percent to Rs 512.25, while wind energy player Inox Wind dipped 0.52 percent to close at Rs 94.85.

The overall market movement reflected cautious investor sentiment, with selective buying in mid-cap renewable and utility stocks, while heavyweight companies faced moderate selling pressure.
