Industrial gas company Air Products South Africa has highlighted the role of long-term industrial partnerships following the installation of a third pressure swing adsorption (PSA) unit at titanium dioxide producer Tronox’s central processing plant in Empangeni, South Africa.
The latest installation expands a relationship dating back to 2002, when the Tronox facility first came online supported by Air Products’ PSA system. A second PSA plant supplying nitrogen was later commissioned in 2019 to meet rising demand.
“We build partnerships with our customers and ensure that we find ways to continually improve processes, systems and equipment which will benefit them,” said Charles Dos Santos, Managing Director of Air Products South Africa.
Titanium dioxide, widely used in paints, plastics, cosmetics and sunscreens, requires large volumes of nitrogen across production processes including purging and blanketing, cooling, sealing systems and solids handling.
South Africa accounts for around 12% of global titanium-bearing mineral reserves, making it one of the world’s largest producers of titanium feedstocks.
Earlier this year during an earnings call, Air Products said it would continue focusing on eight key , with energy and chemicals together representing 21% of its business portfolio.
CEO Eduardo Menezes said the company remained focused on long-term growth opportunities despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
