Chinese solar panel exports to Africa recorded a major increase in April 2026, reflecting the continent’s growing demand for affordable renewable energy solutions. According to Chinese customs data, exports of solar cells and panels to African countries reached 123,787 tons in April 2026, marking an 83 percent rise compared to 67,552 tons during the same month in 2025. The growth also follows a broader trend seen throughout 2025, when African imports of Chinese solar equipment increased by 48 percent year-on-year.
Several African nations witnessed significant growth in solar imports from China. The Democratic Republic of Congo recorded the sharpest increase, with imports surging by 482 percent. South Africa, one of the continent’s largest solar markets, also reported strong demand with imports rising by 81.4 percent. Despite the impressive April figures, shipments were lower than March 2026 levels, when buyers accelerated orders ahead of the expiration of a Chinese export tax incentive on April 1.
Africa is emerging as an important market for Chinese solar manufacturers as they face rising trade barriers and tariffs in traditional markets such as Europe and the United States. Chinese suppliers are increasingly turning their focus toward developing economies where demand for low-cost solar technology is growing .
Competitive pricing remains one of the biggest drivers behind the trend. Chinese solar panels are estimated to be 20 to 30 percent cheaper than products from other Asian manufacturers, making them highly attractive for African countries working with limited energy budgets. At the same time, local manufacturing capacity across Africa remains limited. Morocco and South Africa currently lead the continent in solar panel production, but each produces only around one gigawatt annually.
The growing dependence on affordable Chinese solar imports is supporting Africa’s clean energy transition. Over the twelve months leading to mid-2025, around twenty African countries reached record solar import levels, helping expand renewable energy adoption and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
