A conditional final investment decision (FID) has been taken for the extension of EemsEnergyTerminal in the Netherlands, according to joint shareholder Vopak.
The tank storage provider said together with energy network operator Gasunie, it is taking an important step towards a definitive FID, subject to obtaining the necessary permits, without elaborating on the conditions.
It said the terminal has concluded contracts with customers who will supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the terminal between 2028-2036.
The extension project features dual-floating storage and regasification (FSRU) configuration, enabling the use of two FSRUs.
Belgian shipping group Exmar is converting an LNG carrier into a new FSRU to join the site alongside the currently operating Eemshaven LNG unit, as reported by gasworld .
The combination will provide about 190,000 cubic metres of LNG storage capacity and a total regasification capacity of roughly 1.35 billion standard cubic feet per day.
Gasunie and Vopak are currently planning to expand the terminal’s capacity to 10 bcm per year and working on integrating long-term infrastructure for hydrogen.
The terminal provides critical infrastructure to ensure energy security and diversify gas supplies across Europe, amid ongoing supply uncertainty from the Middle East crisis.
Another project, the Zeeland Energy Terminal for VTTI and Höegh Evi, aims to strengthen and reinforce the Netherlands’ LNG energy infrastructure. The project, targeting late 2029 opening, involves constructing an FSRU in the province of Zeeland, directly connected to the national gas grid.
