Construction has officially begun on a 9.5 MW solar energy project in Salavan province, Laos, marking another step in the country’s efforts to increase the use of renewable energy and support sustainable development. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 29 at Taopoun village in Salavan district and was attended by provincial leaders, government officials, company representatives, and local authorities.

The solar project is being developed by VS Solar One Co Ltd and is expected to contribute to the expansion of clean and environmentally friendly electricity generation in Laos. The project aligns with the government’s long-term plans to promote renewable energy and reduce dependence on conventional power sources.

Several senior officials participated in the ceremony, including Dr. Daovong Phonekeo, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People’s Council, and Mr. Padeumphone Sonthany, Chairman of the Provincial Administrative Committee. Representatives from the project developer and local communities were also present.

During the event, Mr. Soksavanh Phetrasy, Director of VS Solar One Co Ltd, provided details about the project. He explained that the total installed capacity of 9.5 MW will be distributed across three locations in Salavan province. The project includes a 3 MW solar installation at Taopoun village in Salavan district, a 3 MW facility at Phakkha village in Vapi district, and a 3.5 MW installation at Paloy village in Ta-Oy district.

According to Mr. Soksavanh, agreements on electricity pricing for all three facilities have already been signed with Electricite du Laos (EDL). In addition, the official concession agreement for the project was signed on November 13, 2025. Construction activities are expected to continue throughout 2026, with completion targeted by the end of the year.

Once operational, the solar power plants will supply electricity to communities across Salavan province, helping to strengthen the local power supply while supporting the country’s renewable energy objectives. VS Engineering Co Ltd has been appointed as the contractor responsible for construction.

The developer has previously completed a solar project in Bolikhamxay province with a total capacity of 7.5 MW across three sites. The company reported that work on the Bolikhamxay project is progressing well and is expected to be connected to the EDL power grid in June 2026. The company is also planning to expand that project to 15 MW and is exploring additional solar energy opportunities in other regions of Laos.

The ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting event and a tree-planting activity at the project site, symbolizing the province’s commitment to sustainable development and clean energy growth.
