Between cooperation and confrontation: Russia forges energy partnerships with global south

It remains a difficult dance for many countries with Russia.

The European Union has adopted 20 comprehensive packages of sanctions in the wake of the Ukraine war, targeting thousands of individuals and entities while restricting entire sectors of the Russian economy. The 20th package in April included new prohibitions covering .

Yet as the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) reminded us this week, there remains an international appetite for doing with business with Russia, with over 20,000 delegates from 100 countries in attendance.

The estimated total value of deals at the ‘Russian Davos’ has been approximately 6.4–6.5 trillion roubles ($88.56bn), in line with figures for the two preceding years.
