Romania has taken another step toward expanding its renewable energy capacity with the commissioning of a 169 MW solar park developed by Nofar Energy, adding one of the country’s largest photovoltaic facilities to the national grid.

The Iepurești solar project, located in Giurgiu County, has started supplying electricity to Romania’s power system, strengthening the country’s clean energy infrastructure and supporting efforts to increase the share of renewable energy in the national energy mix.

The project is expected to contribute significantly to domestic solar generation capacity while helping meet rising electricity demand with low-carbon power. Its commissioning comes as Romania continues to attract investment in large-scale renewable energy projects aimed at enhancing energy security and reducing dependence on conventional power sources.

Beyond solar generation, the development is also positioned to support the next phase of Romania’s energy transition through planned battery energy storage integration. Nofar Energy intends to deploy a 160 MW/340 MWh battery energy storage system alongside the solar facility, enabling greater grid flexibility and improved utilization of renewable power.

The project forms part of a broader wave of renewable energy investments across Southeast Europe, where developers and investors are increasingly focusing on utility-scale solar and energy storage projects to support decarbonization goals and strengthen electricity infrastructure.

For Nofar Energy, the commissioning reinforces its growing presence in the European renewable energy market. For Romania, it represents another milestone in building a more diversified and resilient power system powered by renewable energy.
