Industrial gas major Air Liquide will invest more than $170m in two gas production plants in Indiana to supply ultra-pure gases to South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix’s first semiconductor facility in the US.
Air Liquide will build, own, and operate the plants, supplying large volumes of nitrogen, oxygen, argon, hydrogen, and other industrial gases to SK Hynix’s $4bn advanced chip packaging facility.
The ultra-pure gases will help maintain the clean manufacturing environment required for advanced semiconductor packaging and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) production.
Air Liquide’s gas production plants are expected to be commissioned by the end of 2028, in line with the scheduled start of operations at the semiconductor facility.
The SK Hynix project will include HBM production lines and advanced packaging R&D facilities, and is supported by up to $458m in grants and access to up to $500m in loans under the US Chips and Science Act.
Introduced in 2022, the Chips Act aims to strengthen US semiconductor manufacturing and increase supply chain resilience through federal incentives for domestic production and R&D.
