IEX Records 13,527 MU Electricity Trading Volume in July 2026, Up 7.7% YoY Amid Rising Power Demand

Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) reported a total electricity traded volume of 13,527 million units (MU) in July 2026, marking a 7.7% year-on-year (YoY) increase, supported by higher electricity demand across the country. However, Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) trading volumes declined sharply during the month despite stronger market prices.

According to government data, India’s electricity consumption reached 170.70 billion units (BU) in July 2026, registering a 10.9% YoY increase. The higher demand led to a 42.5% YoY rise in buy bids in the Day-Ahead Market (DAM), resulting in firmer electricity prices.

The average market clearing price in the Day-Ahead Market increased to Rs 4.99 per unit, up 19.3% YoY, while the Real-Time Market (RTM) clearing price rose 15.1% YoY to Rs 4.41 per unit.

Day-Ahead Market Declines, Real-Time and Term Markets Grow

The Day-Ahead Market (DAM), including the High Price Day-Ahead Market (HP-DAM), recorded a trading volume of 5,087 MU in July 2026, compared to 5,510 MU in the corresponding month last year, reflecting a 7.7% decline.

In contrast, the Real-Time Market (RTM) traded 5,631 MU, up 10.2% YoY from 5,109 MU in July 2025.

The Day-Ahead Contingency and Term-Ahead Market (TAM), including High Price Term-Ahead Market (HP-TAM), witnessed strong growth, with traded volumes nearly doubling to 1,774 MU, compared with 917 MU a year earlier, representing a 93.4% YoY increase.

Green Market Records Marginal Growth

IEX’s Green Market, comprising the Green Day-Ahead Market (G-DAM) and Green Term-Ahead Market (G-TAM), traded 1,035 MU during July 2026, a marginal 0.9% increase over 1,025 MU recorded in July 2025.

The weighted average clearing price in the Green Day-Ahead Market stood at Rs 3.75 per unit, down 4.2% YoY.

REC Trading Falls 56% Despite Higher Clearing Prices

The exchange traded 7.11 lakh Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) during July 2026, a 56.3% decline compared to the same period last year.

REC trading sessions were conducted on July 8 and July 29, with clearing prices of Rs 380 per REC and Rs 376 per REC, respectively. According to IEX, sell bids declined by 77.8% YoY, tightening supply and contributing to higher clearing prices.

The next REC trading sessions are scheduled for August 12 and August 26, 2026.
