South Africa has taken another step toward building its green hydrogen economy through a new collaboration between energy and chemicals company Sasol and Chinese green technology company Envision Energy. The partnership is focused on exploring the development of a green hydrogen production facility at Sasol’s existing operations in Sasolburg, in the Free State province. The initiative reflects the country’s growing commitment to expanding clean energy solutions and reducing industrial carbon emissions.
As part of the collaboration, Envision Energy has been commissioned to carry out an engineering design study for an integrated green hydrogen production system. The study will assess how renewable energy generation, advanced energy storage, and electrolyser technologies can be combined into a single, efficient system capable of producing green hydrogen at an industrial scale. The findings are expected to determine the technical and commercial feasibility of the proposed project.
If the study delivers positive results, the green hydrogen produced at Sasolburg could serve as a key raw material for manufacturing cleaner fuels and chemicals. Planned applications include the production of e-methanol and sustainable aviation fuel, both of which are expected to play an important role in reducing emissions from hard-to-decarbonize sectors such as aviation and heavy industry. The project also supports Sasol’s long-term strategy to transform its existing industrial facilities into lower-carbon manufacturing hubs.
The collaboration was highlighted during a visit by South Africa’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, to Envision’s Net Zero Industrial Park in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia. The visit took place alongside the South Africa-China Energy Investment Conference and underscored the growing cooperation between the two countries in renewable energy, green technology, and industrial development. Government representatives described the partnership as an example of how international expertise can support South Africa’s clean energy ambitions.
South Africa sees green hydrogen as a key element in its strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, diversify its energy mix, and create new opportunities for sustainable economic growth. By combining Envision Energy’s expertise in renewable energy systems, energy storage, and smart grid technologies with Sasol’s industrial infrastructure, the companies aim to evaluate practical and scalable solutions for producing low-carbon fuels. The initiative also demonstrates South Africa’s commitment to strengthening global clean energy partnerships while accelerating its transition toward a more sustainable industrial future.
