Europe Weekly: OX2 Acquires 200 MW/800 MWh BESS, Centrica Signs 99 MW BESS Deal, SPEN Accelerates 30 MW BESS, Zelestra Powers Tesla with 57 MWac, ENGIE, Legrand Sign 24/7 Deal and More…

OX2 has acquired a 200 MW/800 MWh battery energy storage portfolio in Italy, strengthening its position in one of Europe’s rapidly developing storage markets. The acquisition highlights the increasing importance of large-scale batteries as renewable penetration rises and electricity systems require greater flexibility. With four hours of storage capacity, the portfolio can contribute to balancing electricity supply and demand while supporting greater integration of variable renewable generation. The transaction also expands OX2’s presence beyond conventional renewable generation as battery storage becomes an increasingly important component of Europe’s future low-carbon power infrastructure.

Centrica Energy has signed a tolling agreement covering a 99 MW battery energy storage project in Germany, strengthening its involvement in Europe’s expanding flexibility market. The arrangement provides a commercial framework for managing and optimising the battery’s operation across electricity markets. As Germany adds greater volumes of renewable generation, large-scale storage is becoming increasingly valuable for managing fluctuations, balancing the grid and responding to changing market conditions. The agreement demonstrates how tolling structures are emerging alongside BESS deployment to help storage owners manage revenues while allowing experienced energy traders and optimisers to maximise asset performance.

SP Electricity North West is accelerating the connection of a 30 MW battery energy storage system by three years through the use of smart Active Network Management (ANM). The approach demonstrates how digital grid-management solutions can help unlock network capacity without waiting for conventional reinforcement programmes to be completed. By dynamically managing the battery’s interaction with the electricity network, ANM can enable earlier connections while maintaining secure grid operation. The development highlights the growing importance of smarter and more flexible connection arrangements as Britain works to integrate increasing volumes of battery storage and renewable generation into its electricity infrastructure.

Zelestra has commissioned three solar plants in Spain supporting its long-term 57 MWac Power Purchase Agreement with Tesla. The Brazatortas I, II and IV projects in Castilla-La Mancha have more than 74 MWdc of combined capacity, with the PPA designed to supply approximately 130 GWh of renewable electricity annually to Tesla. The projects strengthen Zelestra’s Spanish renewable portfolio while supporting Tesla’s clean electricity requirements. The collaboration demonstrates how corporate PPAs are driving new utility-scale solar deployment and helping major companies secure long-term renewable electricity supplies for their operations.

ENGIE and Legrand have signed what is described as France’s first 24/7 renewable electricity supply agreement, advancing corporate renewable procurement beyond conventional annual matching. ENGIE’s 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy approach is designed to align a customer’s electricity consumption hour by hour with generation from dedicated renewable and flexible assets. The model provides greater traceability between electricity demand and renewable supply while supporting the development of a more flexible power system. The agreement demonstrates how corporate energy procurement in Europe is evolving toward more granular, real-time matching as businesses pursue deeper decarbonisation of electricity consumption.

Recurrent Energy and Octopus Energy have signed an optimisation agreement covering a 14 MW/43 MWh co-located battery energy storage system in Italy. Pairing storage with renewable generation can improve asset flexibility by allowing electricity to be stored and dispatched according to grid requirements and market conditions. The optimisation arrangement reflects the increasing commercial sophistication of Europe’s battery sector, where effective trading and operational strategies are becoming critical to storage economics. The partnership also demonstrates the growing role of specialised optimisation services as Italy scales battery capacity to support renewable integration, electricity-market flexibility and broader grid stability.

Sonnedix has secured €730 million in financing to support the expansion of a 540 MW solar and battery energy storage portfolio across Southern Europe. The financing represents a significant commitment to the region’s next phase of renewable infrastructure development, where solar generation is increasingly being complemented by storage. Combining PV with BESS can enhance flexibility, improve utilisation of renewable electricity and help projects respond more effectively to changing market conditions. The transaction also demonstrates continued lender confidence in large-scale European clean energy portfolios as developers increasingly pursue diversified platforms incorporating both renewable generation and energy storage technologies.

Germany’s photovoltaic systems fed a record 12 billion kWh of solar electricity into the public grid in July 2026, marking the first time monthly solar feed-in reached this level. Average midday PV output exceeded 40,000 MW, highlighting solar’s increasingly central role in Germany’s electricity supply. The actual volume of solar generation was even higher because electricity consumed directly on-site is excluded from grid feed-in figures. The milestone reflects two decades of investment in photovoltaic capacity and demonstrates the growing influence of solar generation on Germany’s power market and broader energy transition.
