Industrial gas major Messer is investing $40m in two projects to expand production in Northern Vietnam as demand grows from the country’s semiconductor and electronics industries.
The company will add 900 metric tonnes per day (tpd) of liquid gas production capacity through a 600 tpd air separation unit (ASU) at its Yen Binh site and a 300 tpd nitrogen liquefier at Song Cong.
Together, the projects will increase Messer’s total production capacity in Northern Vietnam from around 1,100 tpd to 2,000 tpd.
The investment comes as Vietnam accelerates efforts to establish itself as a regional semiconductor manufacturing hub. , gasworld reported that neighbouring Bac Ninh Province had attracted 33 semiconductor-related projects worth a combined $2.74bn.
The country is also seeking to move beyond chip assembly and packaging into higher-value semiconductor design and fabrication, having broken ground on its first integrated semiconductor production facility earlier this year. Electronics already account for approximately $165bn, or 41%, of the country’s exports.
At Yen Binh, Messer’s new ASU will produce nitrogen, oxygen and argon, while the new liquefier at Song Cong will boost supplies of liquid nitrogen – a critical gas used throughout semiconductor fabrication for wafer processing, inert atmospheres and contamination control.
The nitrogen liquefier is expected to begin operations in mid-2027, followed by the ASU by the end of the year.
Messer said the additional capacity will enable it to meet growing customer demand as Northern Vietnam continues to attract foreign direct investment from major technology manufacturers.
Peter Mohnen, CEO of Messer, said the investment demonstrates the company’s long-term commitment to the region.
“For nearly three decades, we have partnered with local industries and consistently invested in our facilities to support the country’s economic growth and industrial development,” he added.
The investment comes as Vietnam backs its semiconductor ambitions with workforce development, targeting 50,000 semiconductor design engineers by 2030 and more than 100,000 industry workers by 2040.
Adrien Rameaux, Country Manager of Messer Vietnam, described Vietnam as one of Southeast Asia’s most promising industrial markets.
“By expanding the production capacity at our existing facilities, we will strengthen our ability to serve customers in high-growth sectors and continue to be a reliable partner,” he added.
According to gasworld Intelligence, Messer is already Vietnam’s largest industrial gas producer by volume with a 35% market share, ahead of Formosa (18%) and Nippon Gases (11%).
