Plans for liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and storage infrastructure at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS) have taken a step forward, following approval by Brevard County commissioners.

The Board of County Commissioners approved a letter dated 25 August supporting the development of infrastructure intended to serve KSC, CCSFS, and the wider region.

LNG is important to the aerospace sector as a source of liquid methane rocket fuel, typically used with liquid oxygen (LOX). It can also support spaceports through fuel storage, transport, and power generation.

According to the letter, the proposed infrastructure would support the energy needs of KSC and CCSFS while also benefiting the wider Space Coast region.

The letter also emphasises the importance of reliable energy infrastructure to the region’s continued development, while identifying LNG production and storage as an opportunity to strengthen local energy capabilities.

It also points to the potential economic benefits associated with developing LNG infrastructure, including supporting existing businesses and enabling further industrial and commercial development in the region.

The letter also highlights the potential for the development to contribute to regional economic growth.

Florida has a cluster of LNG projects. One of the most notable is the proposed Eagle LNG project in North Jacksonville, which has a planned capacity of around one million tonnes per annum (mtpa).
