German maritime technology manufacturer eCap Marine will supply hydrogen fuel cell propulsion systems for two new 3,000 DWT carrier vessels.
The ships, on order for Norway’s Green Maritime Infrastructure (GMI) group, will be built in India and equipped with eCap’s H2EPS power systems, according to industry reports.
Planned for operation by 2029, they will be constructed by Chowgule Shipyards and are intended for voyages mostly in Norwegian waters.
Each vessel’s H2EPS incorporates a 1.2MW PEM fuel cell system, converting stored compressed hydrogen into electricity to drive motors.
eCap is also supplying fuel cell propulsion systems for two Samskip in the form of a 3.2MW H2Powerpack unit. In 2024, it an offshore supply vessel with its hydrogen-electric system, receiving “first-class certification” from DNV.
Hydrogen’s role in the maritime sector faces questions, with operators of larger vessels turning to derivatives like ammonia and methanol, while smaller boats often adopt battery-electric propulsion.
The molecule and its derivatives are, however, widely expected to play a role in the maritime industry’s pursuit of decarbonisation.
The International Maritime Organisation’s current Net Zero framework plans to impose a carbon levy on ships above 5,000 tonnes from 2028, while the EU’s FuelEU Maritime regulation already sets carbon pricing for ships of this size using EU ports.
