Técnicas Reunidas has secured a €200m ($224.4m) contract to build the second phase of a major natural gas pipeline connecting gas fields in western Canada to the expanded LNG Canada processing and export facility in British Columbia.
It comes after the LNG Canada joint venture between Shell, Petronas, PetroChina, Mitsubishi, and Kogas took final investment decision (FID) to expand the Kitimat processing plant’s capacity from 14 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 28 mtpa.
The Spanish engineer’s TR Canada E&C subsidiary will provide engineering, procurement, and construction management services for Phase 2 of the Coastal GasLink (CGL), which will expand the capacity of the 670km pipeline.
The project will involve the construction of five new compression stations along the pipeline, as well as modifications to existing and planned facilities along the route.
It said the contract value exceeded €200m.
LNG Canada’s second phase is due online in 2031. Shell, Petronas, PetroChina, Mitsubishi, and Kogas will offtake volumes relative to their 40%, 25%, 15%, 15%, and 5% respective stakes in the joint venture, primarily to supply Asian markets.
The federal government placed the second phase under the Major Projects Office, granting it streamlined contact on regulatory alignment.
It comes as Canada looks to diversify its LNG exports beyond the US market to meet European and Asian demand.
