Australian advanced materials company Dotz Nano (Dotz) has signed a two-year, €600,000 ($692,000) agreement to supply carbon-capture sorbent to Finnish direct air capture (DAC) developer Soletair Power.
The deal gives Soletair Power access to Dotz material as it develops its Nordic carbon removal operations, while moving the sorbent technology towards commercial deployment.
The agreement will support Soletair Power’s modular DAC systems, which integrate with existing building ventilation infrastructure. Ambient air is passed over the sorbent, capturing CO2 before it is released in concentrated form for subsequent use or storage.
Each unit can capture up to 20 tonnes of CO2 per year, according to Soletair Power, which said the agreement would support its next stage of DAC deployment.
Soletair Power has delivered seven DAC systems and has projects across Finland, Germany, Denmark and Hungary, according to the company.
“This partnership … validates our technology pathway and secures the sorbent supply essential for scaling our DAC operations,” said Petri Laakso, Chief Executive of Soletair Power.
The case for building-integrated DAC has been explored in recent research. A study published this month modelled a building-integrated system in a representative office building in Portugal and found potential gross capture of 3.7 to 5.3 tonnes of CO2 annually.
After accounting for electricity- and sorbent-related emissions within the study’s system boundary, around 89% of the captured CO2 was retained.
A separate 2024 study examining small-scale DAC integrated with a gym’s ventilation system in Sweden modelled capture of 54 to 83kg of CO2 per day. Across a portfolio of 20 gym spaces, the researchers estimated annual capture potential of 588 to 750 tonnes.
The agreement marks a move towards commercialisation for Dotz’s carbon-capture sorbent, with the company describing it as a key step in its technology roadmap.
“Soletair Power’s validation of our carbon capture sorbent demonstrates the real-world performance required for market adoption in DAC applications,” said Nati Harpaz, Chief Executive of Dotz.
Dotz also operates in the building-energy market through its ChillerAI technology, which is designed to reduce energy consumption from commercial cooling systems.
