South Africa’s Green Connection Opposes Eskom’s Proposed 8.83% Electricity Tariff Increase

The Green Connection, an eco-justice organization in South Africa, has urged the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) to reject Eskom’s proposed 8.83% electricity tariff increase for the 2027/28 financial year, citing concerns over its potential impact on households, small businesses and economically vulnerable communities.

The organization said the proposed increase could intensify financial pressure on citizens already dealing with unemployment, rising living costs and higher food and transport expenses. It noted that households are still adjusting to previous electricity price increases, including the approved 8.76% tariff hike for the 2026/27 financial year.

According to The Green Connection, affordable electricity is essential for human dignity and should not be treated merely as a monthly household expense. It highlighted that rising electricity bills are forcing families to make difficult choices between paying for electricity and meeting other essential needs. Small businesses are also facing higher operating costs, which could affect their ability to remain operational and support local employment.

The organization has also raised concerns about the public participation process associated with Eskom’s proposed tariff increase. It argued that allowing only one day for public hearings does not provide sufficient time for individuals, community representatives and civil society organizations to review the proposal and communicate their concerns.

The Green Connection has called on NERSA to extend the consultation period and improve transparency regarding the potential impact of electricity sector reforms and Eskom’s unbundling on consumer tariffs. It believes that meaningful public participation is necessary to ensure that the concerns of affected communities are considered before a decision is made.

The organization further urged the regulator to examine Eskom’s proposed costs carefully and determine whether they are reasonable, necessary and justified before approving any tariff adjustment. It said affordability and public interest should remain central to the regulatory assessment.

Community representatives, including small-scale fishers and local activists from different regions, have also expressed concern about rising electricity and fuel expenses. They said increasing energy costs are affecting livelihoods and placing additional pressure on communities already facing economic challenges.

The Green Connection maintained that electricity pricing decisions must reflect the financial realities of ordinary citizens. It urged NERSA to protect consumers from further economic hardship while assessing Eskom’s proposal. The regulator’s decision will influence electricity affordability and the ability of households and businesses across South Africa to access essential energy services.
