Iraq Removes Customs Duties On Imported Solar Energy Systems To Boost Renewable Energy Adoption

Iraq’s Council of Ministers has approved the removal of customs duties on imported solar energy systems to encourage the adoption of renewable energy, reduce costs for consumers, and support the private sector. The decision was announced during the 24th regular session of the Council of Ministers, chaired by Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi on October 20, 2026.

The removal of customs duties is aimed at making solar energy systems more accessible to Iraqi citizens and encouraging households to use renewable energy to meet their electricity needs. The government expects the measure to support the growth of the private sector and promote wider adoption of clean energy technologies across the country.

By eliminating customs duties on imported solar systems, Iraq is seeking to encourage investment in solar power and make renewable energy solutions more attractive to consumers. The decision could help lower the overall cost of imported solar equipment, although the final price reductions will depend on other expenses, including transportation, distribution and installation costs.

The move comes as Iraq continues to address its electricity supply requirements and explore alternative energy sources. Promoting solar power could help diversify the country’s energy mix and provide households with additional options for electricity generation.

During the same meeting, the Council of Ministers also authorized the Ministry of Electricity, through the General Company for Electricity Transmission in the Northern Region, to sign a power supply contract for a capacity ranging from 600 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts. The decision is intended to support electricity supply in the country.

In addition to energy-related measures, the government approved opening imports for all agricultural crops until December 31, 2026, to strengthen food security. It also approved measures to facilitate the release of medicines, medical supplies and vaccines held at border crossings.

The Council further approved draft legislation concerning medical and health professions and a maritime transport agreement between Iraq and Qatar. It also adopted measures to support oil operations in Basra and authorized the Ministry of Water Resources to invite qualified international companies to prepare detailed designs for the second phase of a water infrastructure project in Basra Governorate.

The removal of customs duties on imported solar energy systems represents a significant step in Iraq’s efforts to encourage clean energy adoption and support the development of its renewable energy sector.
