Ethiopia’s energy sector has witnessed substantial growth in recent years, significantly improving electricity access and benefiting millions across the country, according to the Ministry of Water and Energy.

Ethiopian Minister of Water and Energy, Habtamu Itefa, highlighted the sector’s advancements, attributing the progress to government initiatives and strategic oversight. Since the recent government transition, electricity access has increased to 54% of the population, marking a 6% rise. The number of electricity customers has also grown to 5.1 million, with 320,000 new connections established in the past six months.

“We have made significant strides in providing power to remote areas,” Itefa stated, emphasizing the success of rural electrification initiatives. More than 10,000 residents in Somali, Oromia, Afar, and Dassanech have gained access to electricity through these efforts.

The Minister also highlighted the expansion of solar power plants in educational institutions and other public facilities as a key contributor to Ethiopia’s energy growth.

Additionally, he praised the strategic oversight of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), commending the “special wisdom and ingenuity” applied in its construction. The GERD project remains a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s long-term energy strategy.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has played a pivotal role in advancing the country’s energy and water sectors, Itefa noted.

“The Prime Minister’s contributions have been instrumental in bringing the sector to its current stage of success,” he stated.

Ethiopia continues to prioritize energy expansion through renewable sources, focusing on extending electricity access to underserved areas while strengthening its power generation and transmission capabilities.
