AWS Advances Carbon-Free Energy and Efficiency in Data Centers

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon, is reinforcing its commitment to sustainability by prioritizing carbon-free energy and energy-efficient operations across its data centers.

Aligned with The Climate Pledge, co-founded by Amazon in 2019, AWS aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Annabel Lee, Head of Policy for ASEAN at AWS, emphasized the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance data center efficiency and transition towards cleaner energy sources.

“We are constantly re-evaluating how our data centers operate, working to power them with carbon-free energy and make them more energy-efficient,” Ms. Lee stated.

Innovations in Energy Efficiency
AWS has been investing in purpose-built chips, servers, and cooling systems to optimize energy consumption and prolong infrastructure lifespan. Recent advancements include:

Liquid cooling systems for AI workloads, reducing mechanical energy use by up to 46%.
AWS Trainium AI chips, which accelerate AI training while improving energy efficiency. The latest Trainium 2 chip is three times more efficient than its predecessor.
Reducing stranded power, minimizing underutilized energy in its servers.
AWS also reported achieving its goal of matching 100% of electricity consumption from renewable sources in 2023, seven years ahead of its initial 2030 target. This was accomplished through investments in over 600 solar and wind projects globally.

Southeast Asia’s Renewable Energy Potential
Ms. Lee stressed that Thailand can boost its renewable energy mix by encouraging corporate procurement, deploying cross-border energy grids, and modernizing infrastructure.

“We look forward to collaborating with industries and governments in the region to support Thailand’s energy transition goals,” she added.

One example of AWS’s impact is Energy Response Co Ltd, a Thailand-based sustainability startup leveraging AWS-powered AI solutions to enhance energy efficiency in large buildings and factories across Asia.

To advance corporate renewable energy procurement, AWS partners with the Asia Clean Energy Coalition to support regulatory frameworks that encourage diverse and affordable renewable power purchasing options. The company also advocates for direct procurement models between suppliers and corporate consumers, as well as improved Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) systems.

Policy Advocacy for Renewable Energy Expansion
AWS continues to work with regulators and policymakers to improve energy market structures, enabling more businesses to access clean energy directly. The company supports comprehensive policies for:

Transmission planning and expansion to connect renewable sources to the grid.
Generator interconnection reforms to accelerate clean energy adoption.
“Corporate renewable energy investments are driving the development of new renewable projects worldwide and will play a critical role in Southeast Asia’s energy transition,” Ms. Lee stated.

AWS remains committed to expanding its renewable energy investments in Thailand, contributing to green job creation and the region’s shift toward a low-carbon economy
