Invenergy Kickstarts First Clean Hydrogen Project in Illinois

Invenergy, the largest private developer and operator of clean energy projects, has announced that its first clean hydrogen project, the Sauk Valley Hydrogen facility, is now up and running. Located in Rock Falls, Illinois, this 5-acre facility uses power from Invenergy’s nearby solar plant and Ohmium International’s electrolyzer technology to produce up to 40 metric tons of clean hydrogen per year. It also has the ability to store up to 400 kilograms of hydrogen on-site.“A broad range of industries have identified the immense potential of clean hydrogen, and I am extremely proud that Invenergy has again invested in the talent and technology to pioneer a new energy asset with multiple end users,” said Joel Schroeder, Executive Vice President, Engineering and Technology at Invenergy. “I congratulate the elite team we assembled for building Sauk Valley and I look forward to seeing their unmatched skills support the development of future clean hydrogen production facilities in our portfolio.”

“Collaborating with Invenergy on the Sauk Valley Hydrogen project has been incredible, and we are deeply grateful for the exceptional teams involved. We are thrilled that our cutting-edge PEM electrolyzer technology is making this clean hydrogen resource a reality. This is a significant step toward a sustainable energy future, and we are eager to see its positive impact across sectors,” said Arne Ballantine, Ohmium CEO.

The hydrogen produced at Sauk Valley is currently being used to help cool turbines at the nearby Nelson Energy Center, a 980-megawatt natural gas facility owned by Invenergy. The facility also has the ability to ship hydrogen offsite, and its first offsite delivery will go to an Aether Fuels project via Certarus.
