Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced the successful commissioning of 1,530 new 11 kV distribution substations across Dubai in 2024—an 8.2% increase compared to the previous year. The construction works accounted for over 1 million man-hours (1,070,670), completed in adherence to top international health and safety standards.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, highlighted that the total number of medium voltage (11 kV and 6.6 kV) substations reached 45,317 by the end of 2024. He attributed this rise to Dubai’s ongoing urban and economic growth, which has significantly driven up electricity demand.

“DEWA remains committed to building an advanced and integrated infrastructure that supports Dubai’s ambition to be a global model for sustainable living,” said Al Tayer. “In alignment with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, we are expanding transmission and distribution networks based on demand forecasts up to 2030.”

He added that DEWA’s adoption of cutting-edge technologies across its operations has earned it global recognition, placing the utility among the top performers worldwide in more than 10 key performance indicators. Notably, DEWA has reduced electricity transmission and distribution line losses to 2.2%, compared to international averages of 6%–7% in regions like Europe and the US.

Rashid Bin Humaidan, Executive Vice President of Distribution Power at DEWA, added that the authority continues to integrate smart technologies, partner with global firms, and adopt advanced maintenance practices to ensure high availability, reliability, and sustainability of electricity services. These measures help manage increasing power demands while improving customer satisfaction and service continuity.
