AFRY has been appointed by Cenergi Aeropolis Renewable Energy Sdn Bhd (CARE) to provide Owner’s Engineer (OE) services for a 36 MWp (30 MWac) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant integrated with a 10 MW / 40 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Sepang, Selangor.

The project, located within the KLIA Aeropolis zone, is set to support Malaysia’s clean energy transition by supplying renewable electricity directly to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) under the Solar for Self-Consumption (SELCO) programme.

Once operational, the facility is expected to generate approximately 46 GWh of clean energy annually and reduce around 35,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. This is equivalent to removing nearly 8,000 vehicles from the road or powering more than 13,000 households.

The integration of a utility-scale BESS positions the project among Malaysia’s early large-scale solar installations with energy storage, significantly enhancing energy reliability and operational resilience for airport operations.

Under its scope as Owner’s Engineer, AFRY will provide end-to-end project support, including tender advisory, engineering design review, project management, construction supervision, and BESS commissioning and testing.

Commenting on the development, Petteri Härkki stated that the project highlights AFRY’s capability to deliver complex solar-plus-storage solutions and reinforces its commitment to accelerating sustainable energy systems globally.

AFRY brings over three decades of experience in solar energy, with involvement in more than 90,000 MW of projects across 50+ countries, along with over 20 years of expertise in battery energy storage, having supported around 400 BESS projects worldwide.

The appointment further strengthens AFRY’s presence in Asia’s renewable energy sector and underscores the growing adoption of hybrid solar-plus-storage solutions in Malaysia’s evolving energy landscape.
