AM Green and Mitsui Sign MoU to Explore Low-Carbon Aluminium Partnership

AM Green and Mitsui & Co. Ltd have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore strategic collaboration and investment opportunities in low-carbon aluminium and broader energy transition initiatives.

Under the MoU, Mitsui will assess potential investment pathways across AM Green’s aluminium value chain, supporting equity requirements for the development of what is envisioned as the world’s first integrated green aluminium production platform. The discussions also include potential offtake arrangements for low-carbon aluminium and the supply of auxiliary materials for AM Green’s aluminium smelter and alumina refinery.

AM Green, through its wholly owned subsidiary AM Green Aluminium Metals and Materials, is developing a 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) primary aluminium smelter alongside 2 MTPA alumina refining and mining operations. In November 2025, the company signed an MoU with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to establish a 1 MTPA green aluminium complex in the state. Both the smelter and refinery will be powered by renewable wind and solar energy, firmed with pumped hydro storage. In May 2025, Coal India signed an MoU to supply 4.5 GW of renewable power to AM Green across its business verticals, including AM Green Metals.

Commenting on the partnership, Mahesh Kolli, Founder of Greenko Group and AM Green, said the collaboration with Mitsui would help accelerate the development of low-carbon aluminium while expanding global market access for green products.

AM Green has been established by Greenko founders Anil Chalamalasetty and Mahesh Kolli as a dedicated energy transition and decarbonisation platform. The company holds interests across Power-to-X businesses, including green ammonia, green hydrogen, green metals and chemicals, as well as Bio-to-X businesses such as second-generation ethanol and sustainable aviation fuel.

Greenko currently has more than 12 GW of operational renewable energy capacity across solar, wind and hydro and is developing 100 GWh of pumped hydro storage capacity in India by 2030. AM Green has committed to developing 5 MTPA of green ammonia capacity by 2030 and 1 MTPA of green aluminium capacity.

Mitsui & Co. is a global trading and investment company with operations in over 60 countries and a diversified portfolio spanning multiple industries.
